Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

BMC physicians and employees have been provided training regarding the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). What is HIPAAHIPAA is a privacy rule that does the following:

  • Imposes new restrictions on the use and disclosure of protected health information
  • Gives patients greater access to their medical information.
  • Gives patients greater protection of their medical information.
Patients have the right to receive a notice of privacy practices that describes:
  • How medical information is used and disclosed by an organization.
  • How to access and obtain a copy of their medical records.
  • A summary of patient rights under HIPAA
  • How to file a complaint, and contact information for filing a complaint.
Effective April 14, 2003, HIPAA guidelines and requirements will be upheld and enforced at Brainerd Medical Center.  This means that BMC is required by law to maintain the privacy of protected health information and to provide individuals with notice of its legal duties and privacy practices with respect to protected health information.  BMC is required to abide by the terms of the Notice currently in effect.  BMC reserves the right to change the terms of this Notice.  The new Notice provisions will be effective for all protected health information that it maintains.If you have questions regarding HIPAA, or have matters relating to complaints, please call our Privacy Officer at 218-828-7100.
